Is Private Pilates Worth It? What You Get From One-on-One Pilates
If you’ve been thinking about trying Pilates, you may have wondered whether you should join a group Reformer class or invest in private Pilates sessions.
The answer really depends on what you're looking for.
Group Pilates can be a wonderful way to move, but private Pilates offers something very different: a session designed entirely around you.
At The Mind Body Union, my private Pilates studio in Carlsbad, every session starts with the person in front of me—not a predetermined workout.
Your Body Isn't the Same as Everyone Else's
We all arrive at Pilates with different bodies, movement histories and goals.
Maybe you want to get stronger. Perhaps you're feeling stiffer than you used to. You might play golf, tennis or pickleball and want your body to keep up with the activities you love. Or maybe you're returning to exercise after some time away and simply don't know where to begin.
In a private Pilates session, we can take all of that into consideration.
Instead of trying to keep up with a class, we can slow something down, change the resistance, modify an exercise or spend more time on an area that needs attention.
You Get My Full Attention
One of the biggest benefits of one-on-one Pilates is exactly that: it's one-on-one.
I'm watching how you move throughout the session—not just whether you complete an exercise.
Small changes in alignment, breathing or positioning can completely change how an exercise feels and where you feel it.
And because I'm working with just you, I can make those adjustments as we go.
Over time, this also allows me to get to know your movement patterns and understand what your body responds to best.
You're Not Limited to the Reformer
The Reformer is an incredible piece of Pilates equipment, but it isn't the only one.
In my studio, we can move between the STOTT PILATES® Reformers, Tower, Stability Chair, barrels, mat and small props depending on what we're trying to accomplish.
One exercise might feel difficult on the Reformer but make much more sense to your body using the Tower. The Chair might give us exactly the challenge we need for balance and leg strength. A barrel may help us explore spinal mobility in a completely different way.
Having different equipment gives us options—and private Pilates gives us the freedom to use those options.
We Can Work Toward Your Goals
There isn't one reason people come to Pilates.
Some of my clients want to feel stronger and more toned. Others want better balance, mobility or posture. Some want Pilates to complement another sport or activity, while others simply want to move well as they get older.
Your sessions can evolve as your goals change.
That's one of my favorite things about teaching Pilates: there is always somewhere to go next.
It's a Great Way to Start Pilates
Walking into a large Reformer class when you've never used a Reformer before can feel a little intimidating.
Where do your feet go? Which spring should you use? What are all those straps for?
Private Pilates removes that pressure.
We can take the time to introduce the equipment, talk through the exercises and help you understand what you're supposed to be feeling.
You don't need to arrive knowing anything about Pilates. That's what I'm here for.
So, Is Private Pilates Worth It?
If you simply want a fun workout in a group environment, a group Reformer class may be exactly what you're looking for.
But if you want personal attention, individualized programming and a Pilates practice that can change with your body, private Pilates can be incredibly valuable.
It's especially worth considering if you're new to Pilates, returning to exercise, working toward a specific goal, looking to improve your movement for another activity, or simply prefer a quieter and more personalized environment.
